From An Intern's Perspective: 2024 RAMMYS Awards Gala & Best of Washington

Introduction

Stepping into my summer internship at Stratus Firm just weeks after graduating from college in May, I was filled with excitement and anticipation. As I started on this new chapter in June, I had no idea that in just a few months, I’d be working on two well-recognized events in Washington, D.C.—the RAMMYS Awards Gala and the Best of Washington. These experiences provided me with invaluable insights into the industry, allowing me to contribute to the planning and execution of experiences that called for precision, creativity, and collaboration.

Just two months into my internship, I was given the opportunity to assist with the production of the annual RAMMYS Awards Gala. This black-tie affair, held on July 21st, 2024, has been produced by Stratus Firm for over a decade. The gala called for all hands on deck, and I was eager to dive in and support the team in any way I could.

Earlier in the week, the Stratus team arrived at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center to start event load-in and overall preparation. As the Food and Beverage (F&B) Assistant, I had a front-row seat to the intricate details of event management. One of my main responsibilities was organizing the bar signage across 35+ stations, to ensure that each one was ready to serve the 2,100 guests who would soon fill the massive 130,000 square-foot venue. It was an immense task, but I loved the challenge of problem-solving on the fly.

Another highlight of my role was helping to finalize the production script for the evening. I worked meticulously on this - checking every detail to make sure the event ran smoothly. Each speaker cue and on-screen visual had to align perfectly, and I felt proud knowing that my efforts contributed to the seamless flow of the night.

Once the doors opened, I continued my role as the F&B assistant, delivering alcohol and supplies to various locations throughout the sprawling convention center. With deliveries arriving from different sponsors throughout the day, it was my job to help the supplies reach their final landing spot for the event. As I made rounds in the ballroom, ensuring each bar was fully stocked, it was incredible to see how this intricate machine of people, logistics, and timing all came together.

The best moment? Watching the gala unfold—seeing guests enjoy an unforgettable evening, unaware of Team Stratus’s successful coordination behind the scenes. I felt immense pride in being part of a team that embodied a ‘One Team’ mindset, working in perfect harmony from planning to execution. This cohesive approach was not only a privilege to witness but also a valuable learning experience that I will carry with me throughout my career.

A week after the RAMMYS, I helped to produce the 2024 Best of Washington event, held at the National Building Museum on July 25, 2024. The opportunity to work in such a stunning venue, filled with 2,000 guests and 70+ participating restaurant booths, was nothing short of a dream.

As I prepped for the event, one of my key tasks was creating personalized packets for each restaurant vendor. These packets were essential, guiding the vendors through the event and ensuring they had everything they needed for smooth execution. With 70+ restaurants arriving at the loading docks all around the same time, the pace was fast and intense. I was responsible for managing my assigned vendors, from their arrival to set-up, ensuring they understood event expectations and timelines.

The main event buzzed with energy, while VIP guests enjoyed a stunning view from the second floor, overlooking the breathtaking view of the event space. My favorite moment? Standing on the second floor, looking down at the sea of guests sampling the best food Washington has to offer and the restaurant vendors proudly presenting their food samples. It was a breathtaking sight, one that made me realize how much respect I have for this industry.

Conclusion

Working on the RAMMYS Awards Gala and the Best of Washington has been nothing short of unforgettable. These events gave me a firsthand glimpse into the power of teamwork, attention to detail, and problem-solving in action. Working alongside the Stratus team, I experienced collaboration, attention to detail, and a shared commitment to go above and beyond for unforgettable and elevated experiences.

Overall my summer internship at Stratus Firm has left me feeling inspired and excited to build on these experiences, contribute to more impactful events, and continue creating moments that leave lasting impressions throughout my future career in events.
